Members of the Wayne State women's fencing team competed in the Michigan Open against teams from Detroit Mercy, Michigan and Michigan State on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Matthaei Center. Nearly 100 competitors competed at the event.
The Warriors showed their strength in the women's epee as Anna Garina (Kiev, Ukraine/Republican School) defeated teammate Anna Vinnikov (Ma'alot, Israel/ORT Ma'alot) to win individual meadalist honors. Alyse Schneider (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) placed 9th.
Sophomore Lindsey Howard (Goshen, Ind./Mishawaka) won the foil championship in convincing fashion over the Wolverines' Michelle Leach. Stacy Otremba (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) finished in 19th while Erin Stranyak (Carelton, Mich./Monroe) placed 13th.
Jinelle Lawson (Clayton, Mich./Sand Creek) was the Warriors' top finisher in the sabre placing fourth. Alicia Chmielewski (Harper Woods, Mich./University Liggett) finished fifth. Tiffany Perkins (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) placed 13th while teammate Jozefa Chmielewski (Harper Woods, Mich./University Liggett) finished 14th.
Comcast Local will air a one-hour special on the Michigan Open on Dec. 10th at 6:30 p.m., Dec. 11th at 4:30 p.m., Dec. 13th at 4 p.m., Dec.14th at 9 a.m., Dec. 17th at 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Dec. 18th at noon.
