DETROIT - Members of the Wayne State University women's fencing team participated in the 2003 Michigan Open hosted by WSU in the Matthaei Building on Saturday, December 6.
Freshman Lindsey Howard (Goshen, Ind./Mishawaka) won the women's foil with a 15-4 triumph over teammate Kathryn Hefner (Hartland, Mich./Walled Lake Central) in the championship bout. Freshman Cory Johnson (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) placed eighth.
The Warriors also had the two finalists in the women's epee as sophomore Anna Garina (Calabasas, Calif./Republican School/Kiev, Ukraine) and junior Anna Vinnikov (Ma'alot, Israel/ORT Ma'alot) advanced to the championship bout. Garina was awarded first place when Vinnikov withdrew. Freshman Irina Cotfas (Wyandotte, Mich./Southgate Anderson) was ninth.
Junior Jinelle Lawson (Clayton, Mich./Sand Creek Community) lost in the title bout, 15-6, of the women's sabre to Julie Crimmins. Freshman Alicia Chmielewski (Harper Woods, Mich./University Liggett) was sixth, while classmate Janelle Jones (Southgate, Mich.) was 10th.
