DETROIT - Members of the Wayne State fencing team competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Sunday, March 6, at the Matthaei Center on the WSU campus. The regional is the final competition before nationals. Selections to nationals are based on regional seeding (40%) and regional finish (60%).
Defending national champion Anna Garina (Kiev, Ukraine/Republican School) recorded an unblemished record at 11-0 to win the Midwest Regional in convincing fashion. Senior Anna Vinnikov (Ma'a lot, Israel/ORT Ma'a lot) posted a 6-5 record to place sixth. Vinnikov who entered the region as the third seed will likely be one of the six from the region selected to nationals. Newcomer Alyse Schneider (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) went 1-10 to place 11th in the region.
Sophomore Lindsey Howard (Goshen, Ind./Mishawaka) recorded a 4-7 record in the women's foil to place eighth. Sophomore MaryBeth Ketko (Livonia, mich./Franklin) finished 15th while freshman Stacy Otremba (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson) placed 18th. Notre Dame senior Alicja Kryczalo finished first after defeating Hanna Thompson from Ohio State in a tiebreaker.
Sophomore Alicia Chmielewski (Harper Woods, Mich./University of Liggett) went 1-5 in pool play to finish 14th overall. Senior Jinelle Lawson (Clayton, Mich./Sand Creek Community) went 0-4 in pool play and finished 15th.Ohio State's Amelia Galliard won the women's sabre with a 10-1 record.
The Warriors will now wait for the fencing selection committee's seeding for the NCAA Fencing Championships, which begins on March 17, in Houston, Texas.
