ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The 10th-ranked Wayne State University women's hockey team (13-3-2) skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with the University of North Dakota (11-7-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Easton Showcase, hosted by St. Cloud State University.
Unbeaten in its last five games, Wayne State came from behind twice and scored three goals in the second period, but could not pull ahead of North Dakota. The Warriors remain winless (0-7-2) all-time in nine meetings with the Fighting Sioux.
Four Warriors had multiple-point performances, including freshman Micheline Frappier (Val Caron, Ont./Sudbury Lady Wolves) who scored twice, including the game-tying goal.
Natalie Payne (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) had a goal and an assist, while Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) and Veronique Laramee-Paquette (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) each contributed two helpers.
Two first-period goals from Alyssa Wiebe, a power-play marker at 7:35 and an even-strength goal at 12:18, gave the Fighting Sioux a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
Just 16 seconds into the second period, however, Payne cut the deficit in half with her fourth tally of the season from Laramee-Paquette. It was the third-fastest second period goal in school history and the sixth-fastest overall.
Frappier tied the score on a power play at 15:22 with her second goal of the season. Assisting on the play were Baldin and Laramee-Paquette.
North Dakota regained its one-goal lead less than a minute later, as Alex Williams scored her first of the season from Wiebe and Randi Motsko at the 16:08 mark.
With under a minute remaining in the second period, a power-play goal by Frappier, with assists from Payne and Baldin, made it a 3-3 game heading into the final stanza.
Over the final 25 minutes neither side could net the go-ahead goal, as Wayne State and North Dakota finished with 33 shots apiece in the game.
While the game counts as a tie officially, a shootout was held to crown an Easton Showcase champion. North Dakota won, 1-0, with Mellisa Jaques scoring the only goal.
Goaltenders Lindsey Park (Thornhill, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros) and Brittany Kirkham made 30 saves each in the contest, including four in the overtime period.
With only conference games remaining, Wayne State will take next weekend off before hosting Robert Morris for a series Jan. 16-17 at the City Sports Center in Detroit.
