DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's hockey team retuned to ice after a month off and dropped a 6-3 decision to #4 Minnesota Saturday afternoon at the City Sports Center.
WSU falls to 8-6-1 while Minnesota moves to 14-4-1 on the season and is now unbeaten in eight consecutive games.
Minnesota's special teams proved to be too much for the Warriors as the Golden Gophers built a quick 4-0 first period lead on three power-play goals along with a short-handed tally. UM added two power-play goals to finish 5-of-11 for the game.
Wayne State got goals from sophomores Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) and Tegan Schroeder (Lumsden, Sask./Notre Dame Hounds) along with junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Radiers). Schroeder also added an assist to earn No. 3 star of the game accolades. The Warriors' three goals also were the first allowed by a Minnesota opponent in its last four games.
Minnesota was led by Erica McKenzie who notched two goals. Gigi Marvin, Anya Miller and Dagney Willey each had two assists.
Down 4-0 entering the second period, WSU got on the board with a power-play marker at the 6:22 mark as Protopaps took a feed from Schroeder at center ice and streaked down the middle to beat Minnesota goaltender Kim Hanlon. The Warriors then cut the lead in half, 4-2, when Schroeder stuffed in a rebound off a shot by senior captain Ashley King (Winnipeg, Man./River East Lighting) for the game's only even strength goal.
However, that would be as close as WSU would get as Brittnay Francis and Schoullis each added power-play goals in the third period giving the Golden Gophers a 6-2 lead.
Boal closed out the scoring with a short-handed tally from junior Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) with 15 seconds remaining in the game.
WSU and Minnesota conclude the series Sunday, Jan. 6 at 1:00 p.m. The Warriors invite fans to skate with the team immediately following the game.
