Taylor, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (8-12-0) recorded its first shutout win of the season, blanking visiting Colgate (8-10-1), 5-0, before over 400 fans at the Taylor Sportsplex Saturday afternoon. With the win, head coach Jim Fetter recorded his 50th career win, the winningest coach in the program's eight-year history.
Colgate still leads the all-time series, 8-7-0, as neither team has swept a weekend series in the rivalry.
After being held to one goal on 27 shots on Friday, the Warriors erupted for three goals on eight shots in the first period today. Junior forward Ashley King (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Lightning) started things off for WSU just a minute-and-a-half into the contest when she scored unassisted. Sophomore forwards Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) and Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) finished the scoring in the opening period.
After a scoreless second period, Wayne State added two more goals in the final period to round out the scoring. Poyton recorded her second goal of the afternoon, while senior forward Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) scored her second goal of the season with five minutes remaining in the contest.
Poyton was named the game's number one star as she finished the afternoon with two goals. Sophomore forward Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators), the game's number two star, added her team-leading 16th and 17th assists.
Wayne State outshot the Raiders, 19-18. Junior netminder Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens), making her second-consecutive start, stopped all 18 shots, while Colgate's Brook Wheeler made 14 saves.
Wayne State will end its eight-game home stand next weekend, Jan. 12-13, when it hosts CHA-rival, and top-ranked, Mercyhurst at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Both games are at 3:30 p.m. and are part of a double-header with the men's team, who is hosting Ferris State. Mercyhurst extended its winning streak to eight when it swept Cornell at home, 2-1 and 6-2.
