DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team was unable to avoid a sweep by the third-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, suffering a 3-0 setback at City Sports Center Arena in Detroit on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first period, despite a myriad of penalties that resulted in a brief 3-on-3 situation. However, Wisconsin outshot Wayne State, 14-4, in the period, and would continue to do so throughout the game.

Sophomore Jinelle Zaugg put the Badgers on the board at 7:28 in the second period with her WCHA-leading 17th goal of the season, assisted by senior Sharon Cole.

Wisconsin's second goal came at 14:39, as Heidi Kletzien capitalized on a rebound from Cole's initial shot on Warrior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que./Royal Metabetchouan) for her third goal of the season. Angie Keleley also earned an assist on the play, and the Badgers had a 2-0 lead.

Captain Jessica Snelgrove (Tecumseh, Ont./Team Ontario) nearly put WSU on the board at the 15:34 mark, but was taken down as she shot in front of the crease, resulting in a penalty shot, the first in the program's history. Wisconsin goaltender Jessie Vetter stopped Snelgrove's attempt, however, and the Badgers held their two-goal lead to the end of the period.

Wisconsin also killed three penalties in the period and outshot WSU, 11-5.

Grace Hutchins capped off a scramble for the puck in front of Turcotte's net with her third goal of the season to extend Wisconsin's lead to 3-0 at 3:14 in the third period. Tia Hanson and Erika Lawler each earned an assist.

Vetter earned her second win of the season, saving all 11 Warrior shots, while Turcotte made 33 saves for Wayne State. Each team was held scoreless on five power-play attempts.

The Warriors will begin conference play next weekend, Jan. 13-14, as they travels to Erie, Pa., to take on College Hockey America rival Mercyhurst College.
