DETROIT - In just her third game in a Wayne State uniform after transferring from North Dakota, redshirt junior Sammi Bowers (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Selects) scored two goals to lead the women's hockey team to a 5-0 victory over Maine Friday night at the City Sports Center. The win marks the first time the Warriors have defeated the Black Bears in eight previous attempts. Senior Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) also recorded her seventh career shutout and second of the season earning No. 1 star of the game honors.
WSU improves to 9-6-2 while Maine falls to 1-17-2 on the season. Offensively, Wayne State tallied 39 shots going 2-for-4 on the power-play along with two even strength goals and a short-handed marker. On the defensive end, WSU limited Maine to just 12 shots and 0-for-4 with a man advantage.
In addition to Bowers' two goals which earned her No. 2 star of the game accolades, junior Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) was named No. 3 star with two goals. Sophomore Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) also notched her first goal of the season. After a scoreless first period, Bowers got WSU on the board with a power-play goal at the 7:57 mark of the second stuffing home a rebound off a shot from the point by Wilson. Poyton then took a long pass from Boal and skated in on a breakaway beating Maine goalie Genevieve Turgeon with a backhand winner giving WSU a 2-0 lead.
At the 6:18 mark of the third period, Frankie intercepted an errant pass in the Maine zone and went in all alone for a breakaway short-handed goal. Bowers struck again putting in her second goal off a rebound this time from a shot by Vanderhoeven at the point.
Poyton added her second goal of the game from Boal and Sonn at the 2:34 mark to seal the 5-0 win.
