Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (8-13-0, 1-2-0 CHA) was shut out, 8-0, by No. 1 Mercyhurst (19-1-1, 3-0-0 CHA) Friday afternoon at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The loss was the worst for the Warriors since an 11-0 loss against No. 3 Wisconsin on Oct. 9, 2004 and was the worst score against the Lakers since a 10-0 loss in Erie on Feb. 19, 2000.
Mercyhurst scored two goals two minutes apart by sophomore forward Valerie Chouinard and freshman forward Meghan Agosta. Chouinard's goal was on the power play.
The Lakers would add two more before the period ended on goals by sophomore defenseman Natalie Payne and Chouinard.
Two second period scores came off the sticks of sophomore forward Danielle Ayearst and junior forward Jackie Jarrell, while two third period goals came from junior forward Sherilyn Fraser and Chouinard.
Chouinard proved she loves playing in the Coliseum as she recorded her second career hat trick. Her first three-goal performance came at the Fairgrounds on March 9, 2006, in a 9-0 win over Robert Morris in the conference semifinals.
Freshman forward Angelica Lorsell finished the game with four assists, while Agosta ended with a goal and two assists.
Sophomore goaltender Courtney Drennan, relieving starter Laura Hosier in the third period, made a spectacular save on a Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) breakaway in the third period, preserving the shutout.
Mercyhurst out shot the Warriors, 39-12, and was 2-for-6 on the power play. Wayne State was 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.
Hosier earned the win after making six saves, while junior goaltender Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens) got the loss after making 10 saves in 20 minutes of play. Drennen made six saves in the third period for Mercyhurst, while junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) made 21 saves in 40 minutes.
The same teams will play at the Fairgrounds tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 13, at 3:30 p.m.
