ERIE, Pa. The Wayne State women's hockey team (6-11-4), who entered Friday night 0-24-0 all-time against CHA rival Mercyhurst (13-6-2), skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against the fifth-ranked Lakers at Mercyhurst Ice Arena.
The Warriors were outshot, 44-11, by the host Lakers, but sophomore Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) turned away 42 Mercyhurst shots in her fourth start of the season, matching the career high she established March 5, 2005, at Mercyhurst, her first career start.
Wayne State jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 3:07 mark with a goal from senior Jessica Haydahl (W. Vancouver, B.C./Vancouver Griffins), her second of the season. Classmate Peyton Patterson (Brampton, Ont./Toronto Sting) earned an assist.
Mercyhurst would answer later in the period, however, as Stephanie Bourbeau netted her 11th goal of the season, on a power play, at 8:53 to tie the game. Danielle Lansing and Julia Colizza assisted on the play.
The 1-1 tie would stand through the first 40 minutes of play, despite the 26-4 shots-on-goal advantage held by Mercyhurst.
Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) would score her CHA-leading 15th goal of the season just 17 seconds into the third period to put the Warriors back into the lead, with assists from Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) and Rachael Benninger (Huntington Beach, Calif./California Selects).
WSU held the lead for over 12 minutes until Samantha Shirley tied the game at two, on another power play, with her sixth of the season, assisted by Colizza and Lansing.
Mercyhurst managed three shots in overtime, while Wayne State was held to just one, but the game ultimately ended in a 2-2 tie.
Both Laker goals came on the power play, as they went 2-for-9 overall. The Warriors were held scoreless in six power play attempts.
The two squads will meet again tomorrow afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Arena at 2:00 p.m.
