Jan. 19, 2007
Hamden, Conn. - Sophomore forward Melissa Boal's (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) goal with 1:28 left in regulation earned Wayne State (8-12-1) a 4-4 overtime tie at Quinnipac (7-17-1) on Friday night. The tie snapped the Warriors' six-game winning streak against the Bobcats (6-0-1).
Quinnipiac led 1-0 after one period when Nicolette Leone beat junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) at the 14 minute mark. The Warriors would score two goals three minutes apart in the second period from freshman forward Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) and junior defenseman Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ontario/Toronto Aeros).
But the Bobcats would tie the game at the 15 minute mark on a goal by leading scorer Hayley McMeekin. QU would take its second lead of the game just 53 seconds into the third period on a tally by Elyse Cole.
Boal tied the game at three apiece 10 minutes later, but Quinnipiac would not go away as Kristen Emerick gave the hosts a 4-3 lead near the 18 minute mark, setting up Boal's heroics one minute later.
Quinnipiac outshot the Warriors, 36-24. The Warriors were plagued by penalties as Wayne State was whistled for 11 penalties for 25 minutes, while Quinnipiac had four infractions for eight minutes. The lopsided stats led to three power-play goals on 10 chances for the Bobcats, while WSU was 0-for-4.
Turcotte made 32 saves in 65 minutes, while QU's Laura Brennan made 20 saves.
The tie was the first for Wayne State since a 2-2 stalemate against Mercyhurst on Feb. 11, 2006.
The same teams will play tomorrow, Jan. 20, at 4:00 p.m.
