Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (10-14-1, 2-3-0 CHA) defeated Robert Morris (9-14-2, 1-4-0 CHA), 5-2, on Friday night at RMU's Island Sports Center. The win was the Warriors' fifth over the Colonials in as many games and put WSU in third place in the conference standings.
Sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) had a record-setting evening. She broke the career mark for hat tricks when she posted her second. Both of her three-goal games have come during this season. The previous performance came in a 4-3 loss at Connecticut on Oct. 27. She also scored her second short-handed goal of the season, sharing first place with former Warrior standout Heidi Burns.
Wayne State scored two goals in each of the first two periods and added an empty-net marker in the third period. Boal started things off for the Warriors just under five minutes into the contest with a power-play goal. Freshman forward Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) ended the scoring in the period with a power-play marker.
Junior defenseman Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ontario/Toronto Aeros) gave the visitors a 3-0 lead with another man-advantage tally at the six minute mark. Five minutes later, with RMU on a power play, Boal scored short handed on a two-on-one over Colonial netminder Brianne McLaughlin's glove hand.
Robert Morris made a game of the contest as the Colonials scored two unanswered in the third period to cut the deficit in half, 4-2, on goals from Morgan Biekirch and Kristen Miles. Boal ended the scoring with an empty-net goal with under a minute remaining.
Wayne State's special teams play was phenominal as the Warriors converted three-of-five power plays and killed all nine Robert Morris chances.
Junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) made 19 saves while McLaughlin made 23 saves.
The teams will conclude the weekend series on Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
