Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (11-14-1, 3-3-0 CHA) squeaked out a 3-2 overtime win over Robert Morris (9-15-2, 1-5-0 CHA) on Saturday night at RMU's Island Sports Center.

Robert Morris drew first blood when Jessica Riley intercepted Warrior junior netminder Valery Turcotte's (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) pass at the 13:46 mark of the first period.

The Warriors tied the score at one at the 11 minute mark when freshman forward Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ontario/Bluewater Hawks) scored over Colonial goaltender Brianne McLaughlin's stick side. Sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) passed the puck to sophomore forward Amanda Hungle (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Wild), who skated down the right side and flipped it to Protopapas. The assist was Boal's fifth point of the weekend and is currently on a four-game scoring streak.

WSU took its first lead of the contest when freshman defenseman Chelsea Burnett shot past McLaughlin with seven minutes left in the third period. But the Colonials would not fold, tying the contest, with McLaughlin pulled in favor of an extra attacker, with 41 seconds left as Kristin Miles lit the lamp over Turcotte's glove hand.

It took just eight seconds into the extra period for a winner as sophomore forward Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) scored over McLaughlin's glove hand on a two-on-one. The goal was assisted by freshman blueliner Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale) and sophomore forward Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators). The goal was the fastest to start any period in the program's eight year history.

Both goaltenders shone during the game, with McLaughlin stopping several point blank shots and Turcotte stopping a Kristin Miles breakaway in the third period.

Wayne State led in shots, 38-20.

Wayne State is idle next week, but will travel to Niagara to take on the Purple Eagles on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10. The teams split a weekend series back in December in Detroit earlier this season.
