Niagara Falls, N.Y. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (11-15-1, 3-4-0 CHA) lost to Niagara (8-16-5, 3-4-0 CHA), 6-2, on Friday night at Dwyer Arena. Niagara scored four goals in the first period to set the tempo. With the loss, the teams are tied for second place in the standings.
Niagara started things off nearly eight minutes into the contest as Katie Gray flipped the puck over the glove hand of WSU junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan). The Purple Eagles increased their lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals just 56 seconds apart by Ashley Riggs. After a Wayne State timeout, Niagara scored again with a tally from Lisa Agozzino. Agozzino scored off a rebound past Turcotte's glove hand.
The second period started the same as the first as Niagara led 5-0 after a Charde Hoyle-Levy goal. Wayne State finally got on the board as sophomore forward Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) scored past Allison Rutledge on a breakaway. With the momentum swinging in the Warriors' favor, WSU cut the deficit to three as sophomore f orward Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) scored off a rebound.
Riggs sealed the win - and her hat trick - for Niagara with a breakaway goal midway through the third period.
Wayne State outshot Niagara, 44-19 as NU's Rutledge made 42 saves. Turcotte made three saves in 13 minutes of work, while junior goaltender Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens) made 11 saves in nearly 47 minutes.
The same teams will play tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Wayne State will end its season-high eight-game road trip with a visit to No. 1 Mercyhurst on Feb. 16-17. The Lakers won twice in Detroit on Jan. 12-13, 8-0 and 7-5.
