Niagara Falls, N.Y. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (12-15-1, 4-4-0 CHA) defeated Niagara (8-17-5, 3-5-0 CHA), 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Dwyer Arena. With the win, Wayne State moved into sole possession in second place as the Purple Eagles dropped to third place.
Similar to last night, Niagara drew first blood as Emilie Castonguay scored just 59 seconds into the contest on a two-on-one opportunity between the legs of junior netminder Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens). The Warriors tied the game at one as freshman forward Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ontario/Bluewater Hawks) beat Allison Rutledge on a one-timer pass from sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders).
WSU took its first lead of the weekend when Boal scored on a breakaway unassisted in the second period.
With the score remaining 2-1 Wayne State, Niagara pulled Rutledge in favor of an extra attacker but to no avail as the Warriors prevailed.
Thompson was brilliant in her first start since Jan. 6 against Colgate. After giving up a first-period goal and saving only three shots, she stopped the next 25 shots in the final 40 minutes.
With three points on the weekend, Boal has 86 career points. She needs three points to tie first-place holder Kelly Zamora for the all-time leader in Wayne State women's hockey history and four to move into sole possession of the honor.
Wayne State will end its eight-game road trip with a trip to Erie, Pa., and a visit with No. 1 Mercyhurst on Feb. 16-17. The Warriors will end the regular season when they entertain Robert Morris to the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum on Feb. 23-24.
