Niagara, N.Y. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (10-12-3 overall, 3-2-0 College Hockey America) moved into second place in the CHA with a 3-2 road victory at Niagara University (11-12-2, 2-4-1 CHA) Friday evening.

The win was the first ever at Niagara for WSU, which had dropped the previous four contests at Dwyer Arena and were outscored 17-2 in the process.

WSU snapped a scoreless tie 6:08 into the game as sophomore wing Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) scored her 11th goal of the season off assists from senior center Kelly Zamora (Oshawa, Ont./Toronto Marlies) and junior right wing Jessica Haydahl (W. Vancouver, B.C.).

The host Purple Eagles tied the score just past the mid-point of the contest as Katie Sweeney scored a power-play goal at 12:27.

The game was tied for less than five minutes as junior wing Emily McGrath-Agg (New Westminster, B.C./Vancouver Griffins) scored 11 seconds after a WSU power play had ended. McGrath-Agg's fifth of the campaign came at the 17:03 mark and was assisted by Zamora and Haydahl. For Zamora, it was her fourth multiple-assist game of the season, while Haydahl recorded her first multiple-assist game since Nov. 23, 2002, against Elmira.

Niagara tied the game once again 6:38 into the third period on a goal by Charde Hoyle-Levy.

Wayne State went on the power play with 3:13 remaining in regulation, and although the Warriors will not receive credit for a man-advantage marker since Haydahl scored five seconds after the penalty had expired, the game-winning goal was Haydahl's second of the season.

Junior defenseman Peyton Patterson (Brampton, Ont./Toronto Sting) and Monk assisted on Haydahl's ninth of the season and 21st career lamp-lighter.

Niagara pulled goaltender Allison Rutledge for the final 53 seconds but were unable to tie the contest for the third time. Warrior freshman netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que./Royal Metabetchouan) made 22 saves including 11 in the first period to improve to 3-1-0 in league play. Rutledge turned aside 26 WSU shots including 14 in the third period.

After being outshot 11-4 in the opening 20 minutes, Wayne State recorded 10-8 and 15-5 advantages in shots on goal the last two periods.

WSU went zero-for-four on the power play, while Niagara scored once in three man-advantage opportunities.

The teams will conclude the weekend series with a 2 p.m. face-off Saturday at NU's Dwyer Arena.

Notes:

Wayne State improves to 8-3-2 when scoring the first goal and 7-0-1 when leading after 40 minutes.

The Warriors are now 5-6 in one-goal contests.

Laura Monk and Kelly Zamora both increased their season point totals to 24 with two points tonight. The single-season school record of 26 points was set by Zamora last season (2003-04).

WSU has two double-digit goal scorers for the first time in school history.

Zamora had two assists increasing her season total to 15, three shy of her school record 18 set a year ago.

The Warriors are now 1-4-0 all-time at NU's Dwyer Arena.

The three-point game by Jessica Haydahl was a career-high.

It was Monk's sixth multiple-point game this year, while Zamora recorded her seventh multiple-point game of the season.
