DETROIT, Mich. - A late Laker goal ended the Warriors' hopes for a victory, but the Wayne State women's hockey team (10-13-5, 2-2-2 CHA) came away with a 2-2 overtime tie against No. 6 Mercyhurst (18-7-5, 8-0-2 CHA) on Saturday afternoon at City Sports Center Arena.

Mercyhurst struck first in the contest, on a power play, as Ashley Pendleton sent the puck across center ice to freshman Valerie Chouinard, who sent it right back across to Pendleton. Pendleton skated into the zone and fired a slapshot over the glove of Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que./Royal Metabetchouan) to put the Lakers up 1-0 at the 12:18 mark.

Much like yesterday, freshman Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) tied the game in the first period by making a nice move in a one-on-one with a defender and beating the goaltender on a low backhand. Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) and Amanda Hungle (Regina, Sask./Regina Wild), who each earned an assist, started the play by digging the puck off the boards from the Lakers. Hungle sent a pass forward to Poyton, and she made an off-balance shot to record her 21st goal of the season at 17:21 in the first period.

Poyton extended her goal-scoring streak to six games, while Hungle has an assist in back-to-back games.

Freshman Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders), who has scored in four of her last five games, put the Warriors up 2-1 on a power play at 3:33 in the second period with her 14th goal of the season. The play began behind Turcotte's net, as blueliner Sarah Campbell (Smithers, B.C./Vancouver Griffins) sent the puck out to linemate Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors) on the right-side boards. Vanderhoeven sent the puck forward to Boal, who got past the Laker defender and put it between the pads of Laura Hosier.

With 11 points on the season, Vanderhoeven is now the WSU single-season recordholder for points by a rookie defenseman, passing former Warrior Krissy Langley.

Wayne State's 2-1 lead held until 17:42 in the third period, when Chouinard tied the game with her 19th goal of the season. Natalie Payne took the puck to the top of the right face-off circle and sent it back in to Stefanie Bourbeau, who centered it to Chouinard.

Mercyhurst managed four shots on goal in overtime, compared to two by WSU, but neither team could break the deadlock.

Shots on goal were 35-28 in favor of the Lakers. Turcotte made 33 saves for the Warriors, while Hosier saved 26 shots.

After losing the first 24 meetings in the all-time series with MC, Wayne State has recorded two ties against their conference rivals this season.

Wayne State will play its first series of the season against CHA foe Niagara next weekend at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum, as part of a doubleheader with the WSU men's hockey team.
