Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (12-16-1, 4-5-0 CHA) lost a tough game against No. 1 Mercyhurst (28-1-1, 9-0-0 CHA), 3-1.
Mercyhurst scored first at the eight minute mark on a slap shot between the circles by Valerie Chouinard. The Lakers scored their second power-play goal of the evening as Meghan Agosta scored on a wrist shot that went just underneath the right-corner post. Mercyhurst scored its third goal of the first period as Stefanie Bourbeau deflected a Valerie Chouinard shot past Warrior netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan).
In the second period, Wayne State cut the deficit to two goals as sophomore forward Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) shot a wrist shot over Mercyhurst junior goaltender Laura Hosier's glove hand. The goal was assisted by sophomore defenseman Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ontario/London Juniors).
There was no score in the third period as Wayne State went 0-for-2 with the man advantage and 1-for-8 in the game.
Mercyhurst outshot Wayne State, 36-18. Turcotte made 33 saves while Hosier stopped 17 shots.
The same teams will play tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The Warriors will play its home finale against Robert Morris on Feb. 23-24 at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum. The puck drops at 3:30 p.m. both days.
