Feb. 17, 2007
Erie, Pa. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (12-17-1, 4-6-0 CHA) lost a close 4-2 game against No. 1 Mercyhurst (29-1-2, 10-0-0 CHA) on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Mercyhurst leads the all-time series, 30-0-2.
Similar to last night, Mercyhurst drew first blood as Stephanie Jones scored on a one-timer between the circles from Valerie Chouinard and Meghan Agosta at the 13 minute mark of the first period.
Agosta gave the hosts a 2-0 lead when she scored over the glove hand of junior netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquire, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) on a breakaway opportunity. Turcotte kept the Warriors in the game as she gloved a Stephanie Jones one-timer between the circles.
Wayne State made it a 2-1 contest just 27 seconds into the third period with a Tegan Schroeder (Lumsden, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame Hounds) power-play goal off a rebound. Schroeder saved a potential Mercyhurst goal as Natalie Payne slapped a shot off Turcotte's glove hand. The puck bounced and Schroeder dove to prevent an open-net goal. Mercyhurst extended its lead to 3-1 on a slap shot by Angelica Lorsell past Turcotte's glove hand at the five minute mark of the third period.
The Warriors would not fold, however, as Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) intercepted a pass deep in WSU's end and scored on a breakaway with five minutes left in regulation. The goal was the first short-handed tally allowed by Mercyhurst this season. The Lakers added another insurance goal as Ashley Pendleton ripped a shot past Turcotte at the 16 minute mark of the period. The Warriors pulled Turcotte with six seconds left in regulation but to no avail.
Both teams' power-play units struggled as Wayne State went 1-for-8 and Mercyhurst was 1-for-7. Mercyhurst outshot the Warriors, 38-23, as Turcotte made 34 saves, the most since a similar output against Mercyhurst on Jan. 13.
Wayne State will end the regular season schedule when it hosts Robert Morris at Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum on Feb. 23-24 at 3:30 p.m. Saturday will be senior day for Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres).
