DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (13-13-5, 5-2-2 CHA) earned a convincing 7-0 victory over College Hockey America foe Robert Morris (5-20-2, 2-6-1 CHA) on Friday night at City Sports Center Arena. Only three regular-season games remain for the Warriors before the CHA Tournament.

Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) opened the scoring at 8:09 in the first period with her fourth of the season. RMU turned the puck over on a faceoff in its offensive zone, and Monk carried the puck down the ice and fed a pass to Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) in the left corner. Poyton sent it back to Monk, who slipped the puck in behind RMU goaltender Brianne McLaughlin.

The Warriors took a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Poyton at 11:34. Peyton Patterson (Brampton, Ont./Toronto Sting) and Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) strung together a nice series of passes before finding Poyton open on the left post.

With nine power-play goals, Poyton is in sole possession of first place on WSU's all-time list just 31games into her collegiate career. She also extended her school-record goal scoring streak to nine games.

DiPietro scored Wayne State's third goal of the contest 63 seconds later, after Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) created a turnover behind the RMU net and fed a pass to DiPietro between the faceoff circles. DiPietro has 13 goals on the season.

Completing the scoring in the first period, Poyton netted her second power-play goal of the game and 25th goal of the season at 14:38 to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead. Poyton was open again on the post off McLaughlin's stick side and knocked in a one-timer off a crossing pass from Boal. DiPietro also assisted on the play, tying the school record with three points in the period.

Ninety-six seconds into the second period, Poyton became the fourth Warrior to record a hat trick, and the first since Katie Jones on Jan. 17, 2004, as she scored her 26th of the season. Amanda Hungle (Regina, Sask./Regina Wild) started the play, sending the puck up to Monk, who found herself in a 2-on-1 situation with Poyton. Monk sent it across, and Poyton beat McLaughlin low on her glove side.

Of the four hat tricks scored in WSU history, Poyton's was the fastest, as she scored her three goals in a span of 21:36. The previous record was 27:52 by Jones.

Boal scored the Warriors' next two goals, tallying her first of the contest as collected a rebound from a shot by Patterson to score her 17th of the season and give the Warriors a six-goal lead at 5:41 in the second period. Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ont./Toronto Aeros) earned the second assist on the goal.

Boal's second goal came on the power-play at 11:20 of the third period, when her wrist shot from just inside the right face-off circle sailed past McLaughlin. Wilson and DiPietro were credited with the assists, giving both Boal and DiPietro, along with Poyton, four points apiece on the night.

Wayne State finished with a 46-16 advantage in shots on goal. Fourteen of WSU's 46 shots came off the stick of Boal.

The seven goals scored by the Warriors marks their highest tally since an 8-1 WSU victory over Union on Jan. 2, 2004.

Warrior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que./Royal Metabetchouan) made 16 saves in her second shutout in as many starts. McLaughlin made 39 saves for the Colonials.

Wayne State went 3-for-8 on the power play with 15 shots. RMU managed one shot and did not score in two power play attempts.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m., as the Warriors celebrate Senior Day at City Sports Center Arena.
