DETROIT, Mich. - Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) scored a school-record four goals as the WSU women's hockey team (14-13-5, 6-2-2 CHA) earned its second straight 7-0 victory over Robert Morris (5-21-2, 2-7-1 CHA) on Senior Day at City Sports Center Arena.
Boal gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead just 51 seconds into the opening period with a backhand shot from between the faceoff circles that snuck past RMU goaltender Brianne McLaughlin. Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) and Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors) assisted on the play.
At the 5:43 mark, Boal scored her second of the contest and 20th of the season to put WSU up by two. Kristy Leng (Lindenhurst, Ill./Wisconsin Wild) started the play by leading DiPietro up the ice with a pass to set up a 2-on-1 situation. DiPietro passed across the offensive zone to Boal, who found the back of the net with a quick shot.
Senior captain Jessica Snelgrove (Tecumseh, Ont./Team Ontario) scored her second of the season, and first since Dec. 9 at Princeton, on a 5-on-3 power play at the 17:06 mark. Sam Poyton's (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) shot rebounded to Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres), and Monk was able to tap it back to Snelgrove, who was positioned in front of the net for the shot.
Poyton completed the scoring in the first period with her league-leading 27th goal of the season at 19:34, giving WSU a 4-0 lead. Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ont./Toronto Aeros) found Amanda Hungle (Regina, Sask./Regina Wild) below the left faceoff circle, and Hungle sent the puck across the zone to Poyton. Poyton patiently waited for an opening and found one, firing a shot over the top of McLaughlin.
Wayne State scored three of its four power-play goals in the second period, and two came off the stick of Boal who became the first Warrior to score four times in a game.
The first power-play goal of the period came at 4:53, when Peyton Patterson (Brampton, Ont./Toronto Sting) ripped a shot from just inside the blue line that was tipped in front of the net by Boal, making it a 5-0 game.
Senior defenseman Sarah Campbell (Smithers, B.C./Vancouver Griffins) scored her first goal in 18 games at 10:48 on another 5-on-3 advantage, with an open shot from the top of the right circle. Poyton and DiPietro were credited with assists, giving them three points apiece on the afternoon.
Boal scored her school-record fourth goal of the contest, and 22nd of the season, at 17:36 to put the Warriors up by seven. Campbell passed the puck across the point to Vanderhoeven, who found Boal open near the goal.
Through two periods, Wayne State outshot Robert Morris, 33-11, including a 15-1 advantage in the second period.
The third period went scoreless, but the Warriors were able to kill a two-minute RMU 5-on-3 power play as WSU recorded its 14th win of the season, one shy of the team record.
The Warriors tallied 14 goals in the weekend series, breaking the previous record of 13, set Jan. 2-3, 2004, against Union.
Sixteen of WSU's 42 shots on goal came on the power-play, as the Warriors scored four times in 10 chances. RMU went 0-for-3 on the power play.
Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) made 17 saves in her first career shutout. McLaughlin had 35 saves for RMU.
Wayne State will conclude the regular season with a series at Niagara next weekend, March 3-4. WSU will host both the men's and women's CHA Tournaments the following week, March 9-12. Tickets for the event can be purchased by calling 1-877-WSU-TIKS.
