Detroit, Mich. - Sophomore forward Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) scored four goals - the first time in her career - and freshman forward Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) added two as the women's hockey team defeated visiting Windsor 8-2 in an exhibition game held at City Sports Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first half of the opening period, sophomore defender Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors/Team Ontario) got the Warriors rolling with a wrist shot.
It was then the Poyton and Protopapas show, as the duo scored three goals, two by Poyton, a little over three minutes apart in the middle period to put the game away. Poyton's hat trick goal was a beauty, as she beat the goaltender on a breakaway with a slick backhander.
All three WSU goaltenders saw action as junior Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) started and did not stop any shots. Junior Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) played the second period and stopped one shot. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Rees (Westland, Mich./Little Caesar's) finished the game in the third period and stopped two shots.
Wayne State outshot Windsor 41-5 and were a total of +15. The Warriors only had six power play opportunities to the Lancers' 12, but they made the most of them as they converted on half.
Wayne State will travel to #5 St. Lawrence for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday, October 6 and 7.
