DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (0-1-0) began the 2008-09 regular season with a 3-2 setback to Bemidji State (1-0-0) on Friday night at the City Sports Center.
The Beavers held a 1-0 lead until the third period when the two sides exchanged goals twice. Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) and Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors/Team Ontario) each scored once for the Warriors.
Erin Johnson's tally 89 seconds into the game was the only goal of the game until the 7:10 mark of the final period when Sam Poyton's (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) pass found Boal streaking through the neutral zone. Boal fired a wrist shot from the right wing over the blocker of BSU netminder Zuzana Tomcikova.
The Beavers caught a break moments later, however, when an attempted centering pass from behind the WSU cage by Brooke Collins deflected off the skate of freshman goaltender Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) and trickled in at the 14:02 mark.
Vanderhoeven answered at 15:35 with a power-play goal from Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) and Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) to tie it up, but Kaylee Keys' first collegiate goal at 17:13 proved to be the game-winner.
Shots on goal favored Wayne State, 32-25, but the Warriors were just 1-for-9 on the power play.
Brian registered 22 saves in her first career start, while fellow rookie Tomcikova totaled 30 saves, 15 of which came in the final period.
Wayne State and Bemidji State will face off at the City Sports Center again Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
