![]() Tegan Schroeder Scored the Team's First Goal |
Oct. 6, 2006
Canton, N.Y. - St. Lawrence's senior forward Sabrina Harbec's goal with 14:45 remaining in the game proved to be the game-winner as the No. 4 Saints overcame a three-goal deficit midway through the second period to turn over the upset-minded Warriors, 5-4, Friday afternoon in Canton. It was both teams' first games of the season.
St. Lawrence got on the board first when sophomore forward Carson Duggan scored at the 7:37 mark of the first period. That would be the only scoring for the Saints for nearly 20 minutes as Wayne State got three first-period goals, two power-plays, off the sticks of freshmen defensemen Tegan Schroeder (Lumsden, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame Hounds) and Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale), and sophomore defenseman Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ontario/London Juniors) added an even-strength score.
Sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) would later add a power-play marker just 45 seconds into the second period to put the visitors up 4-1. It was Boal's 50th point in her career, passing former Warrior forward Kim Spaulding (2000-04) for third place all-time.
But the Saints would prove why they are ranked fourth in the country, as Duggan would notch her second of the game at 5:29 of the second period. Sophomore forward Lisa Batchelor, the game's number two star, scored back-to-back goals roughly ten minutes apart. The game-tying goal proved to be the killer for WSU, as Batchelor scored with 23 second remaining in the middle period.
It was then Harbec's heroics, as she beat junior netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan).
SLU outshot Wayne State 28-18, including similar 11-4 differentials in the first and second periods.
The Warriors' power-play squad seemed to click well as they went three-for-nine in the game against the Saints' one-for-six.
With the loss, Wayne State is now 2-5-1 in season openers.
The same teams will face off again on Saturday, October 7, at 2:00 p.m.
