Potsdam, N.Y. - For the second consecutive game, the Wayne State University women's hockey team could not mount any offense and had problems stopping Clarkson's high powered offense as the Warriors were shutout 7-0 by the Golden Knights at Cheel Arena Saturday afternoon.
Two costly penalties set the tone of the game for WSU midway through the first period. After a checking from behind penalty at the 10:24 mark, Clarkson junior Marie-Jo Gaudet wasted little time capitalizing scoring a power-play goal just 16 seconds later to give CU a 1-0 lead. Genevieve Lavoie then put the Golden Knights up 2-0 with another power-play goal after a holding penalty at the 15:23 mark. One minute later, freshman Rebecca Gannon tallied a goal to give CU a commanding 3-0 lead.
Clarkson then added two more goals in the second and third period to put the game out of reach.
For second straight game, Wayne State could not put many shots on Clarkson goalie Eve Grandmount-Beru with only 15 while once again going 0-for-5 on the power play. For the series, WSU only had 31 total shots while going 0-for-10 with a man advantage.
Sophomore Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) led the Warriors with six shots followed with three from junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) and sophomore Tegan Schroeder (Lumsden, Sask./Notre Dame Hounds). Senior goalie Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) made 25 saves in the losing effort for WSU.
Wayne State opens the home portion of the schedule with a two-game series against Union Friday Oct, 19 and Saturday Oct. 20. Game times are 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively at the City Ice Arena in Detroit, Mich.
