BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Wayne State women's hockey team opened the season with a 1-1 tie at Bemidji State on Friday night. Senior Jessica Haydahl (W. Vancouver, B.C./Vancouver Griffins) scored the lone goal for the Warriors, with senior Jessica Snelgrove (Tecumseh, Ont./Team Ontario) assisting on the play.
Haydahl's goal came with just seven seconds left in what proved to be a busy first period, as the two teams combined for 28 shots on goal.
The score remained 1-0 for much of the contest, until Lisa Kissick put one past Warrior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) at the 2:57 mark of the third period to tie the game.
Both goalies faced a fairly even amount of shots and performed well. Turcotte saved 35 of 36 shots faced, while Emily Brookshaw made 32 saves on 33 shots for the Beavers. They each made two saves in overtime to preserve the tie.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday night, Oct. 8, in Bemidji. The Warriors will play their home-opening series against St. Lawrence beginning Friday, Oct. 14.
