BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Warrior women's hockey team was handed its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon at Bemidji State, falling 2-1 to the Beavers. Freshman Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) scored Wayne State's only goal.
DiPietro's goal, the first of her young WSU career, came on a power play at the 11:12 mark of the third period, with assists from freshman Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) and senior Peyton Patterson (Brampton, Ont./Toronto Sting). The Warriors had a total of seven power-play chances on the afternoon, while Bemidji had eight and scored on one.
That power-play goal for the Beavers was the first goal of the game, scored by Jessica Pullar at the 19:21 mark of the first period. After a scoreless second period, Nikki Eckebrecht scored what would prove to be the game-winner for Bemidji State at 2:40 in the third period.
Wayne State had many scoring chances in the game, but Bemidji State goaltender Jill Luebke stopped 35 of the Warriors' 36 shots in the contest. Wayne State goalie Valery Turcotte saved 20 of 22 shots.
The Warriors will return to Detroit for four consecutive home games, beginning with the home opener against St. Lawrence at City Sports Center Arena on Friday, Oct. 14.
