DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (0-2-1 overall) was unable to hold on to a first period lead in falling 3-2 to the No. 1-ranked St. Lawrence University Saints (2-0-0) Friday night at the City Sports Center Arena in Detroit.
The host Warriors took a 1-0 lead as sophomore Ashley King (Winnipeg, Man.) lit the lamp with 2:21 remaining in the opening period off an assist from freshman Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont.).
SLU tied the game 3:34 into the middle stanza as Sabrina Harbec scored off a three-on-one rush.
The Saints then tallied twice in a span of 38 seconds midway through the second period as Crystal Connors (10:52) and Annie Guay (11:30) both scored five-on-five goals.
Wayne State pulled within a goal as freshman Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont.) scored from just outside the crease to extend her goal-scoring streak to two games. Classmates Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont.) and Boal assisted on the lamp-lighter.
WSU sophomore goalie Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que.) made 17 saves, while SLU netminder Jessica Moffatt turned aside 19 Warrior shots. Wayne State went zero-for-six on the power play, while the Saints were unable to convert their lone man-advantage opportunity.
The teams conclude the weekend series with a 2 p.m. face-off on Saturday in Detroit.
