SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (1-1-1) skated to a 1-1 overtime tie in its first road game of the season Friday night at Union (0-4-1).
Wayne State finished with a 63-17 advantage in shots on goal, seven shots shy of the school record of 70 set in 2004. Union netminder Lundy Day amassed 62 saves, however, to snap the Dutchwomen's season-opening four game losing streak. Her counterpart, Lindsey Park (Thornhill, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros), totaled 16 saves.
Suzy Pocock broke a scoreless tie at 2:22 of the second period with a 5-on-3 power-play goal from Adelle Calahan and Jackie Koetteritz, giving the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors, who in three games this season have scored just one goal prior to the final period , did not notch the equalizer until 7:34 of the third. Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) tallied her fourth of the season and 90th of her career.
Both teams registered three shots on goal in overtime, but could not break the tie.
Wayne State was 0-for-9 on the power-play, while Union was 1-for-7 in the game.
The two teams will meet again Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
