DETROIT - History was made on Friday night as junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) became the first Wayne State women's hockey player to score five goals and record seven points in a game to propel the women's hockey team to a 7-1 home opening victory over Union College at the City Ice Arena. Boal added two assists in addition to her five tallies to earn the No. 1 star of the game.

Boal's five goals broke her own record which she set last season scoring four goals against Robert Morris (2-15-06). Her seven points eclipsed former WSU standout Kelly Zamora who notched five points at Sacred Heart (3-5-04).

WSU was also led offensively by No. 2 star Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) who lit the lamp twice with the game winner. Junior Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) tallied three assists to earn No. 3 star honors. For the game, the Warriors had seven goals on 26 shots going 1-for-5 on the power play.

Defensively, senior Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) stopped 12-of-13 shots allowing only one goal.

Union got on the board first as Gabariela Wintner found the back of the net at the 3:14 mark of the first period. Boal got the equalizer with her first goal on assist from sophomore Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) at the 4:54 mark. Poyton put WSU up 2-1 with her first goal from Boal and sophomore Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres).

Boal got her second goal on a shot over the blocker side on assists from DiPietro and Tegan Schroeder (Lumsden, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame Hounds). She completed the hat trick stealing a blueline pass and putting the puck away with a top self shot at the 8:46 mark of the second period to give WSU a 4-1 lead.

Boal added a shorthanded goal just 1:43 into the third period from Poyton and scored the historic goal at the 5:48 mark from DiPietro to put the game out of reach. Poyton also added her second goal of the game half way through the period to secure the 7-1 victory.

Wayne State concludes the series against Union Saturday, Oct. 20 at 4:00 p.m.
