DETROIT - Behind a solid defensive effort, the Wayne State University women's hockey team completed a series sweep over Union College with a 4-0 shutout victory at the City Ice Arena. Senior Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) tallied her sixth career shutout stopping all 15 shots earning the No. 1 star of the game.
With the win, WSU reaches the .500 mark at 2-2-0 while Union falls to 0-0-6. After surrendering 10 shots in the first period, the Warrior defense put the clamps on only allowing six shots the rest of the game while holding the Dutchwomen to 0-for-6 on the power-play.
For the second consecutive game, junior Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) was named the No. 2 star. On a delayed Union penalty, Poyton notched the game-winning goal on assists by junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) and Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ontario/London Juniors) to put WSU up 1-0 in the second period after a scoreless first.
At the 17:16 mark of the second, sophomore and No. 3 star of the game, Katrina Protopapas scored off a face-off draw win by sophomore Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
Half way through the third period, Poyton passed the puck to junior Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) who skated down the left side and pulled it across the crease and notched a backhand winner past Union goalie Lunday Day for a 3-0 lead.
Junior Emily Berzins (Fort McMurrary, Alb./Warner Hockey School) closed out the scoring a the 18:47 mark of the third off assist passes from freshman Janet Babchishin (Sturgis, Sask./Saskatchewan Prairie Ice) and sophomore Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ont./Merivale) securing the 4-0 win.
Wayne State travels to Ithaca, N.Y for a two-game series against Cornell Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 & 27. Game one is set for 7:00 p.m. while game two is at 2 p.m.
