DETROIT, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (0-4-1 overall) was shut out for the second time in as many games, losing to the visiting Clarkson Golden Knights, 2-0, at City Sports Center Arena on Friday night.
Clarkson's first goal came at the 1:35 mark during a four-on-four situation, following a WSU turnover in the neutral zone. Katie Morrison picked up the loose puck and led the Knights on a 3-on-1 attack. Warrior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que./Royal Metabetchouan) stopped Morrison's near-post shot, but Christine Bailkowski followed up on the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Both teams saw several scoring chances in the second period, with Clarkson outshooting Wayne State, 8-7. Clarkson had 26 shots on goal for the game, to Wayne State's 17.
The Warriors' best scoring chance of the third period came on a power-play shot at 10:55 by Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres), who was set up right in front of the net. Clarkson goalie Kira Hurley came up with a solid pad save to maintain her team's lead. She had 17 saves in the game.
The Knights caught a break later in the period for their second goal, as a centering pass from Andrea Maluta caught the stick of a WSU player in front of the net and deflected passed Turcotte.
Wayne State made one last charge late in the game, as Turcotte went to the bench for an extra attacker with 51 seconds left, but the Clarkson defense held.
Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) led the Warriors with four shots on goal in the game. Monk had three shots, and Rachael Benninger (Huntington Beach, Calif./California Selects) had a pair.
Turcotte finished with 24 saves, eight in each period. Despite the loss, she improved to a 2.38 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage. She is tied for the lead nationally with 117 saves this season, and leads the nation in minutes played (302:31).
The Warriors continue to play well on the penalty kill, as the Knights could not score on any of their four power-play chances, despite six shots on goal. Wayne State was unsuccessful in three power-play attempts, and remain with only one power-play goal in 30 tries this season.
Wayne State and Clarkson will play the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22, at City Sports Center Arena. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
