Storrs, Conn. - UConn leading scorer, Jaclyn Hawkins, scored the eventual game-winning goal eight minutes remaining in the third period as the Huskies turned aside Wayne State, 4-3, Friday night at the Freitas Ice Forum. UConn improved to 6-1, while the Warriors dropped to 1-4.
UConn led the entire game until sophomore Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) beat Husky goaltender Brittany Wilson five minutes to go in the second period. Boal ended up with a hat-trick, the second of her career. Her first-career three-goal game came at a 7-0 win against Robert Morris on February 25, 2006.
But the Huskies would score two unanswered goals for the win on goals by Amy Hollstein and Hawkins.
All seven goals were on the power-play. The game-winner by Hawkins came on a UConn five-on-three opportunity.
Junior netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) stopped 27 shots, while Wilson made 26 saves.
UConn was four-of-seven on the power-play, while Wayne State was three-of-11 with the man advantage.
The same teams will compete tomorrow, Saturday, October 28, at 4:00 p.m.
