Ithaca, N.Y. - Special teams proved to be the difference as the Wayne State University women's hockey team scored three power-play goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Cornell at Laynah rink to extend its three-game win streak and hand the Big Red its first loss of the season.
With the win, WSU eclipses the .500 mark with a 3-2-0 record while Cornell moves to 2-1-0. Junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) continued her amazing play leading WSU offensively with two goals while assisting on the game-winning goal. Over the last three games, Boal has accumulated 11 points (seven goals, for assists).
Junior Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) notched a team high three assists while junior Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) connected on her second consecutive game game-winning goal.
Senior Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) picked up her third straight win making 17 saves while allowing only one goal. The WSU blue line held Cornell to 18 shots and a 0-for-3 power play mark.
WSU fell behind in the first period as Cornell's Liz Zorn her second goal of the season to give the Big Red a 1-0. However, a tripping penalty put WSU on the power play with just 31 seconds left in the period. The Warriors would capitalize just 13 seconds later as DiPietro scored the equalizer at the 19:42 mark to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second.
Poyton notched the game-winner in the second period on assists from Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) and DiPietro to give WSU a 2-1 lead.
Boal added a full-strength and power play goal in the third period to put the game out of reach at 4-1.
WSU and Cornell will conclude the series Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m.
