HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (0-5-2), still looking for its first victory of the season, was defeated, 3-2, at Colgate (1-2-2) on Friday night.
The first period ended scoreless, as Warrior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que./Royal Metabetchouan) made 10 of her 19 saves in the first 20 minutes of play.
Freshman Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) gave Wayne State the lead at 1:42 in the second period on her first career goal, with an assist from captain Jessica Snelgrove (Tecumseh, Ont./Team Ontario). Colgate's Allison Paiano tied the game at 18:37 with her second goal of the season.
Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators), the reigning CHA Offensive Player of the Week, netted her fourth goal of the season at 2:31 in the third period, with an assist from Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ont./Toronto Aeros), to put the Warriors back in the lead. The one-goal advantage lasted less than three minutes, however, as Paiano scored her second goal of the game at 5:16 to even the score at 2-2.
Sam Hunt then scored the third and final goal for Colgate at 15:26, ultimately handing Turcotte and the Warriors their fifth loss of the season.
Shots were even at 22 for both teams and, while Wayne State shut down both of Colgate's power-play opportunities, it did not convert on four power-play chances.
The Warriors will face the Raiders again on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 29, at 2:00 p.m.
