DETROIT - The Wayne State University Women's hockey team rallied from a 3-0 deficit but its upset bid against #4 St. Lawrence fell short as the Warriors fell, 5-3, on Skate for the Cure Night at City Sports Arena.
With the loss, WSU saw its season-high four-game win streak snapped moving to 4-3-0 while St. Lawrence improves to 5-2-0 on the year.
WSU was led by junior Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) who scored two second period goals just 1:42 apart to earn No. 3 star honors of the game. Junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) continued her five-game point streak with a goal and assist.
No. 1 star of the game Carson Duggan paced St. Lawrence with three points (two goals, one assist) while Sabrina Harbec tallied a goal coupled with two assists to earn No. 2 star accolades.
After falling behind 3-0 in the second period, DiPietro pulled WSU within one goal at 3-2 with two tallies from Boal and junior Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) respectively at 15:30 and 16:42.
In the third period, Boal streaked down the middle and fired a shot at SLU netminder Megan Guckian who made the save but could not corral the rebound. The puck came back to Boal and she was able to stuff it home through the left side from a power-play goal to tie the game at 3-3.
The bounces went St. Lawrence's way as Harbec was able to break the tie at the 2:16 mark of the third. She scored through the right side on a pass from behind the goal that trickled off the back of the net and landed in front of senior goalie Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens).
Duggan's second goal of the game sealed the 5-3 victory.
Game two of the series between Wayne State and St. Lawrence is slated for Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.
