Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team defeated visiting Cornell, 3-2, at City Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon. It was the second-straight win for the Warriors and first weekend sweep this season. Wayne State improved to 3-5-0, while the Big Red dropped to 1-4-1.

For the second-straight game, Cornell struck first when Brianne Schmidt scored her third goal of the season midway through the first period. The Warriors would tie it up just 33 seconds into the middle period on a goal by sophomore forward Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators). The goal was assisted by sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) and junior defenseman Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ontario/Toronto Aeroes). Boal passed the puck to Wilson in the offensive zone, then centered it to DiPietro, who snuck the puck between Cornell goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski's pads.

The Warriors would take a 2-1 lead when freshman defenseman Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) beat Niesluchowski. Poyton assisted on the goal, who took the first shot and then Burnett put the rebound into the net.

The Big Red would tie the game four minutes later on a goal by Miranda Callaghan.

Junior forward Ashley King's goal 11-and-a-half minutes into the second period would prove to be the eventual game-winner. Similar to Burnett's goal, freshman forward Brandi Frakie's (St. Louis Park, Minn/Minnesota Thoroubreds) original shot resulted in a big rebound for King, who snuck the puck past Niesluchowski.

Junior netminder Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens), making her second-straight start, made 21 saves, while Niesluchowski, seeing her first action of the season, stopped 36 Warrior shots.

Wayne State will remain home as it hosts Minnesota State on Friday and Saturday, November 10-11, at 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively. Friday's game is Skate for the Cure.
