DETROIT - The Wayne State University Women's hockey team put fourth a solid effort before falling, 5-2, to #4 St. Lawrence at City Sports Arena. WSU falls to 4-4-0 while St. Lawrence moves to 6-2-0 on the year.
Junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) continued her six-game point streak leading WSU with two points on a goal and assist to earn No. 3 star honors.
St. Lawrence's Chelsea Grills led the Saints with four points (one goal, three assists) earning No. 1 star accolades while Sabrina Harbec notched a goal and assist to earn No. 2 star honors for the second consecutive game.
Sophomore Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) gave WSU a 1-0 first period lead on a power-play goal from Boal and sophomore Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres).
St. Lawrence would respond with the equalizer as Grills scored on a one-timer from a feed across the crease from Harbec.
Neither team could capitalize on good scoring opportunities mid-way through the second period. St. Lawrence went on a 5-on-3 power play but could not cash in as the Warriors successfully killed both penalties. The Saints would then draw hooking and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties to put WSU on a 5-on-3 power play. However, the Warriors also could not take advantage and missed the open net on a rebound chance with 35 seconds left on the extra men advantage.
SLU's Michelle Zimmerman then picked a good time for her first career goal scoring on a feed from Grills and Karell Emard to give the Saints a 2-1 lead at the 17:15 mark.
In the third period, the Saints took advantage of a WSU slashing penalty just six seconds in as Tara Akstull scored the game winning goal on a power-play tally to put SLU up 3-1.
Boal then took advantage of a St. Lawrence turnover taking the puck on a feed from Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) and skated down the right side, pulled the puck across the left side beating Megan Guckian to pull WSU within one, 3-2.
Harbec added another goal for St. Lawrence at the 9:58 mark which was later followed by another tally from Tara Akstull to seal the 5-2 win.
Wayne State heads to Boston, mass. for a two-game series at Northeastern Saturday and Sunday Nov.10-11. Both contests are scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
