Sam Poyton notched her second career hat trick in WSU's 6-2 vicotry over Northeastern

BOSTON - Behind a solid offensive effort led by junior Sam Poyton's (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) second career hat trick, the Wayne State University women's hockey team got back to its winning ways with a 6-2 victory over Northeastern Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. With the win, WSU snaped its two-game losing skid and improves to 5-4-0 on the season while Northeastern falls to 1-7-1.

For the third time this season, WSU scored over five goals in a game and remains unbeaten when doing so. In addition to her three goals, Poyton added two assists for a team and game-high five points. Junior Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) added a goal and a team-high three assist while junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) extended her scoring streak to seven games with two goals and an assist.

Defensively, senior goalie Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) record her second win of the season making 23 saves. Defensemen Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors/Team Ontario) and Danielle Wilson (Gravenhurst, Ont./Toronto Aeros) both picked up their second assists of the year.

Northeastern was led by Chelsey Jones who notched a goal and assist while Nikki Petrich assisted on both NU goals.

WSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period. Poyton scored the first goal of the game at the 2:51 mark on assists from by Dipietro and Wilson. DiPietro then added another tally approximately two minutes later. Poyton got her second goal of the game from Boal and DiPietro at the 8:51 mark.

Northeastern got on the board on a goal from Jones assisted from Katy Applin and Petrich cutting the WSU lead to 3-1.

Boal notched her 12th and 13th goals of the season in the second period to give the Warriors a commanding 5-1 lead.

Poyton completed the hat trick at the 10:47 mark of the third period on an assist form Vanderhoeven.

NU's Alyssa Wohlfeiler added a goal with just 22 seconds remaining in the game.

Both team conclude the series Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
