Nov. 11, 2006
Detroit, Mich. - Sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) set the Wayne State women's hockey goal record with her 35th tally as the Warriors defeated visiting Minnesota State, 7-3, on Saturday, Nov. 11 at City Ice Arena. The Warriors improved to 4-6 overall, while the Mavericks dropped to 4-7-0.
Boal's goal, her 12th of the season, was part of a three goal first period for Wayne State. The Warriors would add four more in the middle stanza for the win.
Sophomore forward Emily Berzins (Fort McMurray, Alberta/Warner Hockey School) started the scoring for WSU with an even-strength tally. It was the first goal of the season. A key component for the goal was the work of junior forward Ashley King (Winnipeg, Manitoba/River East Lightning), who tied up the defender and freed the puck for Berzins to come in and shoot it over Minnesota State freshman netminder Katerina Geertsen's glove hand.
The Warriors would add two more on goals by freshman defenseman Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale) and Boal to put the hosts up, 3-0, after 20 minutes.
The second period was a busy one as seven goals total were scored before the period ended, three by Wayne State.
After sophomore forward Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ontario/Ottawa Lady Senators) and MSU's Kristina Bunker scored for their respective teams to make the score 4-1, the Warriors scored two unanswered to put the game away. Sophomore forward Sam Poyton's (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) goal came just seven seconds after Bunker scored for the Mavericks. Freshman defenseman Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) scored the other goal for the Warriors to put WSU ahead, 6-1.
After two consecutive goals by Maverick Lindsay Macy, Warrior sophomore forward Amanda Hungle (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Wild) ended the scoring with a tip-in score after a Poyton pass.
Junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) made 25 saves, while Geertsen, making only her second appearance, stopped 14 shots after being pulled after Wayne State's fifth goal. She was relieved by game one starter, Britni Kehler, who made 11 saves in over 33 minutes of action.
Wayne State will continue its homestand when it hosts ECACHL-member Clarkson for two games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17-18 at City Ice Arena. The games are at 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
