MANKATO, Minn. - The Wayne State women's hockey team was defeated at Minnesota State, 5-1, on Saturday, completing a series sweep for the Mavericks.

The Warriors outshot the Mavericks, 32-29, in the contest, but managed just one goal on MSU netminder Britni Kehler and could not capitalize on any of their 10 power plays.

MSU led 1-0 at the end of the first period thanks to Brittany Mackley's third goal of the season at the 14:23 mark. Alycia Wilson and Jodi Helminen assisted on the play.

Things quickly unraveled for the Warriors and starting goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Que./Royal Metabetchouan) in the second period, as MSU's Noelle Needham put in the eventual game-winner at 10:15, with an assist from Amanda Stohr. Felicia Nelson followed up 35 seconds later with a short-handed goal to put the Mavericks ahead, 3-0, and Needham netted her second of the contest and third of the series at 13:59 to make it a 4-0 game.

Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) got Wayne State on the board with an unassisted goal at 16:11 in the second period. She now possesses a goal-scoring streak of five games.

Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens), who came on late in the second period to replace Turcotte, surrendered a goal to Kristina Bunker to complete the scoring at 16:59 in the third period, with an assist from Conway.

Thompson saved 11 of 12 shots faced in just over 26 minutes of work. Turcotte took the loss and finished with 13 saves. Kehler made 31 saves for the Mavericks, earning her sixth win of the season.

The Warriors will be on the road again next weekend, Nov. 19-20, as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on Cornell. The team returns to home ice Nov. 25-26 to face St. Cloud State.
