Detroit, Mich. - Freshman forward Brandi Frakie's (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) second goal of the season proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Wayne State women's hockey team (5-6-0) completed the comeback over visiting Clarkson (5-6-1) by defeating the Golden Knights, 2-1, on Friday, Nov. 17 at City Ice Arena.
The Warriors were trailing after one period after Clarkson's Genvieve Lavoie beat Warrior junior netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) with just five seconds remaining in the opening period. She split the defensemen and scored, on the breakaway, via her backhand.
Clarkson would hold onto that one-goal lead until under 10 minutes remaining when sophomore forward Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) beat CU goaltender Stephanie Hansen.
Six minutes later, it was Frakie's heroics, as it was her first-career game-winning tally.
Clarkson had a two-to-one advantage in shots (30-15) and neither team was able to convert on the power-play (WSU 0-for-2, CU 0-for-4).
Turcotte, who made 29 saves, was brilliant between the pipes, stopping multiple shots, including a two-on-one midway through the second period that she saved by the toe of her pad. Hansen stopped 13 shots in the loss.
The two teams will face off tomorrow, Nov. 18, at 2:00 p.m. at City Ice Arena.
