DETROIT - Behind a solid defensive effort from both teams, the Wayne State University women's hockey team and Rensselaer skated to a 1-1 overtime tie Saturday afternoon at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum. WSU moves to 7-4-1 and has a four-game unbeaten streak while Rensselaer moves to 6-5-2 on the year.

Junior Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) was named the No. 3 star of the game scoring WSU's only goal in the second period on assists from juniors Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) and Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders). Both Poyton and Boal increased their point streak to 10 games.

Senior goalie Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) earned No. 1 star accolades with 23 saves.

Rensselaer goalie Sonja van der Bliek recorded 18 saves to earn No. 2 star honors.

After a scoreless first period, RPI's Laura Gersten gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead at the 5:12 mark of the second period. Poyton got the equalizer half way through the frame at the 10:04 mark.

Both teams had excellent opportunities to break the 1-1 tie in the third period and overtime but could not capitalize. WSU took a checking penalty with 2:49 remaining but Rensselaer could not find the back of the net as the Warriors successfully killed off the power-play. With 20 seconds remaining in overtime, Rensselaer took an interference penalty but WSU could not put a shot past van der Bliek as time expired.

WSU hits the road for a two-game series at Colgate Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24, in Hamilton, N.Y. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m. for both contests.
