Ithaca, N.Y. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (4-7-2 overall) snapped a two-game losing streak by rallying for the final two goals in a 5-4 road win at Cornell University (1-4-0) Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) had four points on two goals and two assists.
Freshman Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) started the scoring with a power-play goal at the 12:57 mark of the opening period. Her sixth of the campaign was assisted by Poyton and defenseman Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors/Team Ontario).
WSU increased its lead to 2-0 1:41 into the middle stanza on a man-advantage marker by blueliner Sarah Campbell (Smithers, B.C./Vancouver Griffins). Her first of the season was assisted by senior Jessica Snelgrove (Tecumseh, Ont./Team Ontario) and Vanderhoeven.
The Big Red pulled within a goal on a power-play marker by Caeleigh Beerworth at the 4:10 mark.
Cornell tied the score late in the second period on an even-strength goal by Becky Fisher with 3:10 left in the frame.
Wayne State regained the lead on Vanderhoeven's first collegiate lamp-lighter. Her power-play tally at the 7:18 mark was assisted by Campbell and Poyton.
Cornell took its lead first lead of the game, 4-3, by scoring twice in a span of 1:32. Halina Kristalyn scored an even-strength goal at 9:45 and Vicki Hodgkinson netted a power-play goal at 11:17.
Poyton tied the game at four with her sixth of the year from classmates Boal and Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators).
Poyton completed the Warrior rally with the game-winner at 17:53. Her team-leading seventh of the campaign was assisted by DiPietro and senior blueliner Kristi Thome (Euclid, Ohio/Ohio Flames).
WSU sophomore goalie Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) finished with 22 saves, while Cornell goalie Flora Vineberg was credited with 31 saves. The Warriors were three for six with the man-advantage, while the Big Red scored two power-play goals in seven opportunities.
The teams conclude the weekend series with a 1:00 p.m. face-off on Sunday at Cornell's Lynah Rink.
