Hamilton, N.Y. - After falling behind two goals, the Wayne State University women's hockey team rallied to keep its four-game unbeaten streak alive with a 4-2 win over Colgate Friday afternoon at Starr Rink. WSU is now 8-4-1 while Colgate falls to 3-7-1 on the year.
Junior Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) led the way for WSU with an assist and two goals, including the game winner in the third period increasing her point streak to 11 games. Junior Lindsay DiPietro (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) added three assists.
Junior defensemen Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors/Team Ontario) and freshman forward Janet Babchishin (Sturgis, Sask./Saskatchewan Prairie Ice) both added goals to round out the scoring for WSU.
Senior goalie Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) picked up the win with 35 saves and is unbeaten is her last five starts between the pipes.
WSU fell behind 2-0 on goals from Colgate's Erin Brown and Beth Rotenberg. The Warriors would respond capitalizing on a 5-on-3 three power-play with Vanderhoeven's goal from Poyton and DiPietro at the 10:42 mark of the second period. Poyton then tied the game at 2-2 on an assist from DiPietro with just 1:06 left heading into the second intermission.
Poyton notched the game winner from DiPietro to put WSU up 3-2 in the third period. Babchishin sealed the game with her second goal of the season from junior Emily Berzins (Fort McMurray, Alb./Warner Hockey School( Mercyhurst) and senior captain Ashley King (Winnipeg, Man./River East Lighting) at the 13:33 mark.
Game two between the Warriors and Raiders is set for Saturday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m.
