Durham, N.H. - The New Hampshire Wildcats proved to Wayne State why they are ranked second in the country as No. 3/2 UNH defeated visiting Wayne State, 7-1, on the opening day of the UNH Tournament. The game was the second of the day as earlier, No. 2/3 Mercyhurst beat No. 9 Boston College, 4-0. With the loss, Wayne State dropped to 5-8, while UNH improved to 13-1-1.
New Hampshire scored twice in the first period, three times in the middle period, and added two more in the final stanza for the win. The Wildcats led as much as 6-0 before freshman forward Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds) beat UNH netminder Melissa Bourdon. The goal was assisted by senior forward Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres).
Junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) started for Wayne State and gave up six goals in over 42 minutes before being pulled for junior Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ontario/Thunder Bay Queens), who gave up the final goal in over 17 minutes.
Each team was 1-for-2 on the power-play. Sophomore forward Melissa Boal's (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders) nine-game point scoring streak ended tonight.
Wayne State, who played then-No. 4 St. Lawrence earlier, is now 0-3 against ranked opponents this season.
The Warriors will conclude the UNH Tournament when it plays another ranked team, No. 9 Boston College, on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 4:00 p.m.
