The Wayne State University women's hockey team had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 7-3 setback at Colgate Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink. Despite the loss, junior Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) scored a goal to increase her point streak to a school record 12 games eclipsing her own mark of 11 set during the 2006 season.
WSU drops to 8-5-1 while Colgate moves to 4-7-1 on the season.
Freshman forward Adrianna Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Belle Tire U-19) had her best game of the season leading WSU with her first career goal and assist.
Senior defenseman Jenny Cameron (Copper, City, Fla./North American Hockey Academy) and junior forward Becky Sonn (Waupaca, Wis./Madison Capitols) also recorded their first career assist while junior forward Amanda Hungle (Regina, Sask./Team Saskatchewan/Regina Wild) notched her first assist of the season.
Senior goalie Tiffany Thompson (Dryden, Ont./Thunder Bay Queens) had her five-game unbeaten streak snapped picking up only her second loss of the season with 12 saves. Senior Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) had 13 saves in a relief effort.
The Raiders were led by junior Sam Hunt who scored her third career hat trick.
After a scoreless first period, WSU's defense struggled as Colgate's offense exploded scoring five consecutive goals to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Senior captain Ashley King (Winnipeg, Man./River East Lighting) got WSU on the board in the third period on an assist from Pfeffer and sophomore Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres).
Pfeffer added another goal from Sonn and Hungle followed by Poyton's record setting goal from junior defensemen Tina Vanderhoeven (London, Ont./London Juniors/Team Ontario) and Cameron but it was not enough as Colgate added a goal and a empty netter for the 7-3 win.
The Warriors continue their season in 2008 with a two-game home series against Minnesota, Jan. 5-6.
