STORRS, Conn. - In the opening game of the Nutmeg Classic at the University of Connecticut, the 10th-ranked Wayne State University women's hockey team (9-3-1) had its six-game winning streak come to an end following a 5-4 setback to the host Huskies (8-6-2) on Friday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum.
Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ont./Ottawa Raiders) lit the lamp for the fourth consecutive game and broke into the top 10 all-time in NCAA history with 185 points. Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) finished with a goal and an assist for the third straight game.
The two senior forwards have 99 and 98 goals, respectively, for their careers and are on the verge of becoming the fifth and sixth players in NCAA history to reach the 100-goal mark.
Lindsay DiPietro's (Manotick, Ont./Ottawa Lady Senators) two helpers Friday increased her career total to 116 and moved her into eighth place on the NCAA all-time assists list.
Wayne State struck first at 3:26 of the opening period on Poyton's 14th goal of the season from DiPietro. Connecticut's Dominique Thibault, who scored twice Friday including the game-winner in the third period, tied it up at 15:01 and the Huskies never trailed again.
Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) and Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) also lit the lamp for Wayne State, which saw its record evened at 4-4-0 all-time against UConn.
The Warriors will face whoever loses tonight's Quinnipiac/Yale contest Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
