Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (6-9-0) did something Friday night it had never done in its eight year history: defeat a ranked opponent. The Warriors did just that as they beat No. 9 Princeton (8-5-2), 4-2, before over 170 people at City Ice Arena. Wayne State ended a three-game losing streak, while the Tigers are in the midst of a five-game slide.

After a scoreless first period, Princeton scored two goals in the middle stanza for a 2-0 lead on goals by Kim Pearce and Annie Greenwood. WSU would score a goal to cut the Warrior deficit to one on a goal by sophomore forward Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres). The goal was assisted by freshman blueliner Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) and sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders). Burnett passed to Boal, who took the initial shot. Poyton grabbed the rebound and snuck it past the goaltender.

The third period belonged to the Warriors who scored three unanswered for the win. Sophomore forward Amanda Hungle (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Wild) started things off for the hosts as she rebounded off an initial shot by senior forward Laura Monk (Mississauga, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres).

The game-winning goal belonged to freshman forward Brandi Frakie (St. Louis Park, Minn./Minnesota Thoroughbreds), her second such tally. She broke through on a breakaway thanks to a cross-ice pass from freshman defendseman Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ontario/Merivale). Frakie snuck the puck five-hole through the goalie.

The Warriors would add an insurance marker on an empty-net goal by Poyton, her second goal of the game. Poyton broke through all alone when she intercepted a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone by a Princeton player.

Junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan), the game's number one star, was brilliant making 37 saves, including all 17 in the third period.

Wayne State was 2-for-4 on the power-play, while Princeton was 0-for-5.

Head coach Jim Fetter had this to say about his team's performance: "We were so close against Boston College that we needed everyone to be patient and show up for the battle. Val played great and was able to bounce back from two weeks ago."

The same teams will complete the weekend series on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 3:00 p.m. at City Ice Arena.
