Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (6-11-0, 0-1-0 CHA) was doubled up by visiting Niagara (5-10-4, 1-0-0 CHA), 6-3, Saturday night at City Ice Arena. The games were the conference openers for both teams and the Purple Eagles, leading the all-time series 15-6-0, have won the last four meetings.
The Purple Eagles led 2-0 after one period on goals by Charde Hoyle-Levy and Ashley Riggs. Riggs would end the night with four points (2-2--4).
Wayne State would cut the lead to one on a goal by redshirt-sophomore Becky Sonn (Waupaca, Wis./Madison Capitals), who scored off a rebound by sophomore forward Melissa Boal (Pakenham, Ontario/Ottawa Raiders). Sonn's goal was the first in her collegiate career.
But Niagara would take a 3-1 lead on a goal by Mary McKinnon. After a Sam Poyton (Hamilton, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) made the score 3-2, Niagara scored the next two goals to take a 5-2 lead. Boal beat Purple Eagle netminder Allison Rutledge in the third period, but Niagara's Candace Boyles would finish the scoring with a tally at the 13-and-a-half minute mark.
Junior goaltender Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, Quebec/Royal Metabetchouan) made 30 saves while Rutledge made 26 saves.
Wayne State was 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Purple Eagles were 1-for-7.
The same teams will play tomorrow, Sunday, December 17, at City Ice Arena. The puck is set to drop at 2:00 p.m.
